Terceira (Portuguese for "third" as in the "third island to be discovered") is an island in the Azores archipelago, in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.
It is one of the largest islands of the archipelago, with almost 60,000 inhabitants in an area of almost 400 square kilometres (near 155 square miles).
It is the location of the historical capital of the archipelago, the Azores' oldest city and UNESCO Heritage Site (Angra do Heroísmo). Away from the coast, Terceira has a wild and hilly landscape providing many walking and hiking trails. Famous for its rich history, culture, food, beaches and summer festivities, Terceira has a lot to offer to visitors.
